PLAIT (through O. Fr. pleit, from Lat. plidtum, folded, plicare, to fold), properly a fold, especially a fold of cloth, now usually in the collateral form " pleat." " Plait " is now principally applied to entwined strands of ribbon, hair, straw or fibre.
