Petoskey
PETOSKEY, a city and the county-seat of Emmet county, Michigan, U.S.A., on Little Traverse Bay, an arm of Lake Michigan, at the mouth of Bear Creek, in the north-west part of the lower peninsula. Pop. (1890), 2872; (190x5), 5285, of whom 856 were foreign-born; (1904), 5186; (1910), 4778. It is served by the Pere Marquette and the Grand Rapids & Indiana railways and by steamboat lines to Chicago, Detroit, Buffalo and other lake ports. Bear Creek furnishes considerable water-power, and among the manufactures are lumber, paper, leather and foundry and machine-shop products. Petoskey was settled about 1874, was incorporated as a village in 1879, was chartered as a city in 1895, and in 1902 replaced Harbor Springs as county-seat. It was named after an Ojibwa Indian chief.
